What is your teaching philosophy?

  • Personal development for every individual student is our core philosophy.   Our primary focus is to teach children “Life Skills” because a structure of respect, courtesy and honesty are built into the Martial Arts, children develop the ability to listen, learn, and achieve with a highly regulated environment. Most sports don’t build leadership traits, if you have the necessary skills to perform you’re in the game, if not you’re on the bench. E.Y. Martial Arts & Self-Defense Concepts is different; our programs are designed to develop leaders. Each week we teach the children how to develop such traits as confidence, self-discipline, better listening skills, honesty, integrity and much more. The classes combine the fun and excitement of martial arts training with weekly mental and philosophical lessons designed to strengthen our children mentally and physically.

Do you have a beginner program?

  • At E.Y. Martial Arts & Self-Defense Concepts students are grouped by rank and age. In this way, you will be in a class with students at your age and skill level. We have three levels of skill: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. It is very important that you build a strong foundation regardless of your age. All our new students start in the beginner program to develop confidence in their martial art skills. Our students then progress at their own pace. You cannot earn a black belt in a couple of months; it takes time, patience and perseverance. “Black Belt Excellence takes time.”

How many classes per week should I attend?

  • We recommend at least two classes per week, plus a certain amount of practice time in between classes as the perfect level of training. This allows the student time to work on material between classes and become proficient before new concepts are introduced.

Will my child have fun?

  • Our goal at E.Y. Martial Arts & Self-Defense Concepts is to give kids a head start on life. It has been our understanding that parents want the lasting benefits of confidence, respect, self-esteem and self-discipline that martial arts has to offer, however, nobody wants a struggle with the children when it’s time to get ready for class. Our instructors have become leaders in the field of motivating children. It is a required part of our instructor training to take seminars on how to teach children “so they want to learn.” Motivation, excitement and fun are the essential tools we use to increase the learning and performance of our Lil’ Dragons and Karate for Kids also offer various school events that teach children how to get along better with others, thus creating a spirit of teamwork and a sense of belonging and comradery

Do I have to be in shape or be flexible before starting the martial arts?

  • Definitely not! Being in shape or being flexible is not a pre-requisite for involvement in the martial arts. However, you will enjoy a greater level of both as a result of training with us.

Will my child learn to be abusive?

  • Absolutely not! Martial arts are self-defense, not self-offense. Every child is taught our “student creed,” which is a necessary part of learning the philosophy of our school. Students are taught “I'll always maintain the Martial Arts spirit and never fight for selfish goals". Our creed is a commitment students learn in order to maintain the courtesy and integrity of our art.
